AVATAR
---At this point, I have to wonder why do people still second guess the genius of James Cameron? Before the release of every single one of his films, expectations were low. I was just blown away by the Jim Cameron Sci-fi Megafucktacular of 2009! James Cameron has taken up the "awesome" torch once held by Stanley Kubrick. The longer you wait for one of his movies, the better it is. This movie is basically the culmination of 40 years of sci-fi pop culture (starting with 2001 through to The Matrix) forced into an amusement park ride of a movie. I felt like I was watching two different genres/movies collide. At one hand, there is the Roger Dean inspired fantasy world of the Na'vi with its exotic creatures, flourescent vegetation and floating mountains. It's like watching a cinematic version of every Yes /Asia album cover. On the other hand, there is the cold hard aesthetic of the "Space Marine" world run by it's souless corporate henchmen perfected by Cameron in the film Aliens. The last third of the movie collides into a wonderful cross-genre battle sequence, that will be picked apart for decades. This was the kind of battle scene George Lucas was attempting in Episode 1, Peter Jackson mastered in The Lord of the Rings movies and now Jim Cameron has set the new standard. It's full on Giant Robots and Dinosaurs kind of awesome! Good job, Mr. Cameron, consider me just one of among many throngs of admirers of this mindfuck of a movie. ****=4 stars! |

I find Jeff Dunham funny, sorry. Ventriloquists always crack me up. I consider it one of my character flaws..

Here are some works-in-progress that we'll get to see next year...aside from the next installment of the Resident Aliens strip, that is pretty much it for new art for this decade...
